KIYOMIZU-DERA TEMPLE
This temple, which belongs to the Kita Hoso sect, was founded by Enchin, the great priest, in the eighth year of Hoki (778 AD). It enshrines, in the main sanctuary, an image of Kannon – God of Mercy. This Buddhist God of mercy and benevolence has been the object of the ardent faith of Japanese people of all classes throughout the ages. The present structure, rebuilt in the 17th Century (1633) consists of Romon (the two storied gate), Sanjunoto (the three storied pagoda)and Shoro (the belfry) amongst other buildings.
